What makes a good landscape print? There will of course be many different views. Some will consider the topography and geology to be all important but this merely achieves a record of the scene. In my view, a good landscape photograph uses lighting and composition to capture those elements which convey the mood and character of the location in a single image but one which makes the location immediately recognisable.. For me, the print should capture our reaction to the location, the beauty, the drama as well as the character of the location. It should make others ‘want to visit’ to experience the beauty for themselves. Landscape photography is learnt and understand over a long period of time. With each year there comes the understanding of light - and how to use it to instill mood into the prints. Over time comes the experience to understand those unusual rare weather conditions which make for a special print.Over time comes the fine tuned ability to see the gentle changes of hue and luminosity with the changing light. The necessary experience has been gained to understand and capture these conditions and be able to capture the mood and colours in the final print. The print is all important. It is a record and memory of that very special moment of time, a transitory moment which comes to life on the sheet of paper and is there to share for many decades. Wherever we look around us, everything is transitory - even objects with a degree of permanence vary in their appearance with the changing light and weather conditions. Our artistic eye will see this beauty and we are able to capture it and bring it to life it on the final print. We are the eyes for other people.
